VGM stands for video game music. It has many worshippers even today. Includes the early traditional 8-bit and 16-bit chiptunes made with a console's soundchips where the sounds are created from a mixture of square waves, triangle waves and controlled static noise, or the more modern pieces made with a variety of instrumentation.
